How old do you have to be to have Tenant Insurance?

You must be 18 or older to purchase a tenant insurance policy with APOLLO.

Written by Celina De Bruge

You must be 18 years of age or older on the effective date of your policy to purchase tenant insurance with APOLLO.

What About Coverage for Younger Dependents?

While minors cannot be named as the policyholder, dependent children under 21 or dependent students temporarily living away from home are automatically covered under a parent or guardian's tenant insurance policy. No separate policy is needed for them.

For students who are 18 or older and living independently, APOLLO offers a dedicated Student Tenant Insurance product designed specifically for their needs.

Special Cases and Limitations

  • Minors: Children under 21 are automatically covered but cannot be named on the policy.

  • Temporary Occupants: Tenant policies do not support adding temporary occupants or subtenants.

  • Maximum Occupants: Most policies allow up to three named individuals. For additional family members, consider a separate short-term policy.

Coverage Limits and Shared Scenarios

When sharing a policy with roommates or family members, each individual will have access to the same coverage limits. For example, if you select add-ons like Enhanced Water Protection or Tech Toys, all named insureds will be covered up to the chosen limits.

Policy Management: Adding or Removing Individuals

To manage individuals on your policy:

  • Adding Family Members: Use the Customer Portal to add eligible family members. Immediate family members are covered automatically, so listing them is optional.

  • Removing Family Members: Obtain a signed Release of Interest (ROI) form from the individual to remove them from the policy. There is no additional cost to add family members to the policy. However, ensure your coverage limits are sufficient to protect everyone’s belongings.

Adding Roommates or Extended Family Members

Roommates and extended family members, such as siblings or in-laws, are not automatically covered and must be explicitly added to the policy. To add them:

  1. Log in to the APOLLO Customer Portal.

  2. Navigate to “Manage My Policy” or “Add Family/Roommate Details.”

  3. Enter their name and email address.

  4. Save the changes to update your policy. Note that roommates will share the same coverage limits as the policyholder, including personal property and additional living expenses.
