What is Personal Liability Coverage and what does it include?

What personal liability coverage is, real-world examples of when it applies, what it covers and excludes, and coverage limits on your APOLLO tenant policy.

Written by Celina De Bruge

Personal liability coverage protects you if you're held legally responsible for accidental property damage or bodily injury — whether it happens at home or elsewhere in the world. It's one of the most valuable, and most underappreciated, parts of your tenant insurance policy.

Real-world examples

At home
You accidentally leave the bathtub running and water floods into the unit below yours. Your neighbour holds you responsible for the damage. Personal liability coverage can help cover those costs.

With your pet
Your dog bites a visitor, or knocks someone over and they're injured. Liability coverage can cover medical expenses and legal fees if they decide to sue.

Away from home
You're playing sports in a park and accidentally injure another player, or break a window with a stray ball. Personal liability coverage extends to many situations away from your residence too.

On your property
The mail carrier slips and falls in your driveway. Your washing machine isn't properly maintained and causes a flood. Liability coverage applies to negligence-related incidents on your property.

What's covered

  • Accidental property damage you cause to others

  • Bodily injury to others due to your negligence

  • Your pet injuring or damaging property belonging to a third party

  • Legal defence costs if you're sued

  • Incidents that occur away from your home, not just on your property

What's not covered

  • Automobile accidents — these are covered by auto insurance

  • Intentional bodily injury or property damage caused by you or a family member

  • Injuries or damages sustained by you or family members living in your home

  • Business activities or claims related to your profession

Coverage limits

APOLLO offers personal liability coverage of $250,000 to $2,000,000. We recommend the $2M option — the premium difference is small, but the additional protection is significant. You can review and adjust your liability limit anytime through the Customer Portal.
