How can I cancel my tenant insurance policy?

How to cancel your APOLLO tenant policy, who can cancel, short-rate fees, refunds, and alternatives that may mean you don't need to cancel at all.

Written by Celina De Bruge

You can cancel your APOLLO tenant insurance policy at any time through the self-serve Customer Portal. Before you do, it's worth checking whether you actually need to — many situations don't require a full cancellation.

Before you cancel — consider your alternatives

Many situations that seem to require cancellation don't actually need one:

  • Moving? Select "I'm moving" in the Customer Portal to update your address instead.

  • Bought a home or condo? You can modify your coverage type through the portal.

  • Changing payment dates or coverage amounts? These can all be done without cancelling.

  • Don't want to renew? Decline your upcoming renewal through the portal instead of cancelling mid-term — this avoids cancellation fees entirely.

Who can cancel a policy?

Only the named insured — the primary policyholder — is authorized to cancel. No other individual, including close relatives or dependents, can cancel on the named insured's behalf without their explicit consent.

Cancellation fees

If you cancel before your 12-month term ends, a short-rate cancellation fee applies. Fees are calculated using the R7 short-rate table included in your policy documents:

  • The earlier you cancel, the higher the fee — early cancellations typically amount to 3–4 months of your policy's premium.

  • The longer your policy has been active, the lower the fee.

  • Taxes and policy fees are fully earned and non-refundable, regardless of when you cancel.

  • Cancellation fees cannot be waived or reduced under any circumstances.

How to cancel

  1. Navigate to Manage my Policy

  2. Select Cancel Policy

  3. Choose your cancellation date and reason

  4. Review the estimated fee or refund, then confirm

Once a policy is cancelled, it cannot be reinstated or modified, including changes to the effective cancellation date.

A confirmation will be sent to your registered email once the cancellation is finalized.

The effective cancellation date determines when your coverage will end. For example, if you select July 31 as the effective date, your policy will remain active until that day.

Refunds

  • Annual policies: any eligible refund will be returned to your original payment method within 7–10 business days.

  • Monthly payment policies: any outstanding balance will be charged to the card on file at the time of cancellation.
