Is my live-in partner covered by my insurance policy?

Common-law partners are automatically covered, but non-common-law partners need their own policy. Here's the distinction.

Common-Law Partners

If you and your partner are in a common-law relationship, they are automatically covered under your APOLLO tenant insurance policy β€” no need to add them separately. In Canada, common-law status generally applies after 12 months of cohabitation, though this may vary by province. Check your policy wording for the precise definition that applies to your coverage.

Non-Common-Law Partners (Boyfriend/Girlfriend)

If your partner does not meet the definition of common-law, they are not automatically covered under your policy. In this case, they have two options:

  • Get their own policy β€” this gives them independent coverage and helps them build their own insurance history.

  • Be added to your policy as a roommate β€” log in to the Customer Portal to add them. Note that any claims they make will affect your policy's claims history.
