How do I change my policy start or end date?

Learn what's possible when you need to adjust your coverage start or end date, and how to make changes through the Customer Portal.

Written by Celina De Bruge

Sometimes you need your coverage to start or end on a different date than originally planned — a lease that's been pushed back, a move that happened earlier than expected, or a rental period that's been extended. Here's what's possible and how to make changes through the Customer Portal.

Changing your policy start date

Your policy start date can be changed before your coverage begins. Once the policy is active (i.e. the start date has passed), the start date is locked and cannot be moved.

To change a future start date, log in to the Customer Portal and navigate to your policy details. If your policy hasn't started yet, you'll see an option to update the effective date. If you don't see this option or need help, reach out through our Contact Us page and our team can adjust it for you.

Note that changing your start date may affect your billing. If you're on a monthly plan, your billing cycle will shift to match the new start date.

How to Start a New Policy

Starting a new policy with APOLLO is quick and easy — you can get covered in less than 5 minutes, 24/7, from any device.

To get started, visit apollocover.com and select the type of coverage you need

Changing your policy end date

APOLLO policies are issued as 12-month terms. Extending a policy beyond its current end date is handled through renewal — your policy will automatically renew for another 12 months unless you opt out. See How to opt out of auto-renewal for details.

If you need coverage for less than 12 months, you have two options:

  • Cancel early — Start a 12-month policy and cancel on the date you no longer need coverage. A short-rate cancellation fee will apply for mid-term cancellations. See How are cancellation fees calculated? for what to expect.

  • Set a future cancellation date — In the Customer Portal, you can schedule a cancellation for a specific future date rather than cancelling immediately. This keeps your coverage active until exactly the date you need it to end.

To set a future cancellation date, log in to the Customer Portal, go to your policy, and select the cancellation option. You'll be able to choose a future date and see an estimate of any fees or refunds before confirming.

If your dates are changing because you're moving

If your address is changing — not just your dates — make sure to update your address as well as your coverage dates. Your tenant insurance is tied to a specific address, and moving without updating your policy means you may not be covered at your new location. See I'm moving. How can I update the address on my policy? for step-by-step instructions.

What if I have two policies overlapping?

If you purchase a new policy for your new address before cancelling your old one, you may temporarily have two active policies. This is fine — you won't be double-covered for a single claim, as each policy covers its own specific location. You can cancel the old policy as of your move-out date through the Customer Portal, and any unused premium will be refunded minus any applicable cancellation fees.
