What optional coverages can I add to my APOLLO tenant policy?

When you get a quote or manage your existing policy, you'll see several optional add-ons beyond the core coverage. Here's a plain-language guide to each one — what it does, who it's for, and whether you likely need it.

🔵 Enhanced Water Coverage (Sewer Backup + Overland Flood)

What it covers: Water damage from sources outside your unit — specifically sewer line backups and overland flooding (heavy rain, snowmelt, rivers overflowing). These are not covered under a basic policy.

What it doesn't replace: Your basic policy already covers sudden internal water damage (burst pipes, toilet overflow, appliance malfunction). Enhanced Water Coverage adds protection for external sources on top of that.

Who should add it: Most renters benefit from this add-on. It's especially important if you live in a basement unit, near a body of water, in an older building with aging pipes, or in a city prone to heavy rainfall. Water damage is one of the most common claims generally processed in places like Halifax, Edmonton, Calgary, and Toronto, which top the list.

How to add it: Select it during the quote flow, or add it through the Customer Portal under "Modify Coverage."

🛡️ Tenant Shield (Accidental Property Damage)

What it covers: Accidental damage you cause to your rental unit itself — things like a cracked countertop, broken fixture, or damaged flooring. This is distinct from your personal liability coverage, which covers third-party claims.

What it doesn't replace: Normal wear and tear, intentional damage, or damage caused by a covered event (fire, water) — those go through regular contents or liability coverage.

Who should add it: Renters who want protection against security deposit deductions and avoid potential conflict with their landlord over accidental damage. Particularly useful for renters with children or pets, or those in older units where damage is more likely to be noticed.

How to add it: Toggle it on during the quote flow, or add it via the Customer Portal under "Modify Coverage."

⭐ APOLLO+ (Rate Lock + Claim Forgiveness + Payment Flexibility)

What it covers: Three benefits bundled together for one annual fee:

  • Rate Lock: Freezes your premium at your current rate for one renewal — protecting you from the ~10% average annual increase in tenant insurance rates.

  • Claim Forgiveness: One filed claim per term won't trigger a premium increase at renewal.

  • Payment Flexibility: Change your payment date up to three times per term (vs. once without APOLLO+).

Who should add it: Anyone who wants cost predictability or plans to stay at the same address for at least two years. Particularly valuable if you're adding Enhanced Water Coverage or Tenant Shield, since claims in those categories are fairly common and could otherwise raise your renewal rate.

How to add it: Available during the quote flow, at renewal, or through the Customer Portal.

📦 Increased Contents Limits

What it covers: Boosting your personal property (contents) limit above the default. If the total replacement value of your belongings exceeds your chosen limit, you won't be fully reimbursed after a major loss.

Who should add it: Anyone with a full apartment of furniture, newer electronics, high-end clothing, or other valuable belongings.

How to add it: Adjust the contents slider during the quote, or increase it through the Customer Portal.

💍 Increased Sub-Limits for High-Value Items

What it covers: Certain categories of items — jewellery, bicycles, e-bikes, collectibles, and high-end electronics — have specific sub-limits within your contents coverage. If a single item or category exceeds the sub-limit, the excess won't be covered even if your overall contents limit is high enough.

Who should add it: Anyone with valuable jewellery, an expensive bike, camera equipment, or collectibles.

How to add it: Adjust through the quote page by checking off the appropriate sublimit box or through the Customer Portal.
